Hargrove has raised sixteen recruits and thinks "I could have raised them ere this had it not been for the unpopularity of a certain man!" He asks Wortham to find out if he is entitled to any bounty or pay. Closes by saying "May the boys forever love their Capt as they did when I left them."

George Wortham was a Confederate officer, who served as a Captain in the Twelfth North Carolina Infantry and later Colonel in the Fiftieth North Carolina Infantry.

Kittrells NC. June 17th 1861
Capt. George Wortham: - A suitable opportunity presents itself to me for writing you a few lines. Perhaps you would like to know how I am getting along raising recruits: I can simply state that eight of Greenvilles brave sons have placed their names upon my list, & eight more have promised to do the same next week; sixteen being my number to raise. I think I could have raised them ere this had it not been for the unpopularity of a certain man! I guess you know to whom I allude. Commdg. R. B. Gillican & myself are in the same Company. Tell Lt. Hesten Miss L. Hamlet made a good many enquiries concerning him. You will please find out whether or not I am entitled to a bounty & pay for my services while a member of the [G.L.G, O]; I joined you one week after the company left Oxford & remained with the company until about the 1st of June. If I am entitled to anything you will please collect for me, pay yourself out of it for your trouble & send the remainder to me by T. L. Williams & you will much oblige your true friend. May the boys forever love their Capt as they did when I left them.
