At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document, with printed signature. Treadwell, Captain of Ordnance, informs Captain Albert A. Day (Company K, 20th Michigan Infantry, 9th Corps) that his return of ordnance and ordnance stores for the fourth quarter of 1864 has been examined in the Ordnance Office, and referred to the Second Auditor for settlement. Ordnance department envelope included, indicating that contents of the envelope pertain to official business of Alexander B. Dyer, Chief of Ordnance.
