At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Goldsborough was the commanding officer of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron from 1861 to 1862. He participated in the Battle of Roanoke Island (7-8 February 1862) under the command of Union Army Brigadier General Ambrose E. Burnside, attacking a Confederate fleet off the coast of North Carolina.
