Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written to The St. Louis Daily Globe, requesting delivery of the paper, and giving advice to the publishers. With two endorsements by other writers at the bottom, one signed with the initials J. H.

Montgomery Blair was the United States District Attorney, and would later serve as Mayor of St. Louis and Postmaster General under President Lincoln.
