Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

United States Military Telegram from Couch's Headquarters. Reports no trouble with officers and plans to fill batteries. Written one week before McClellan finally move the Army across the Potomac, and less than a month before McClellan was replaced. General Darius N. Couch had been in Charleston two days prior.

Morgan, an 1857 graduate of West Point, was the Captain of the 4th Artillery. Hunt served as Chief of the Artillery for the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War.
