Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Telegram from McCann to Brigadier General Scammon informing that he can get two mountain howitzers for his division. With autograph endorsement signed by Scammon in initials stating "Yes! When will you come?" On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph. Year inferred from similar documents in the collection and from Scammon's rank. Bottom half of sheet has been ripped off.
