Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Undated, unsigned letter addressed only to "Col." Refers to a Father Park who aided Colonel Fitzhugh by sending money to Baltimore. The writer states by doing so, Park helped the Confederates and states "...by this act not only sympathized with our Enemies but to the extent of his ability gave them aid and comfort."
