Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letters to his wife and family, written as a member of the 21st Michigan Infantry, Army of the Cumberland. The letters begin with his recruitment camp (Camp Siegel) in September 1862, and end with the election, just after the fall of Atlanta at Kingston, Georgia, on 8 November 1864. Includes the Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River) (see letter 12, long and graphic), Knoxville, Chattanooga and the fall of Atlanta. Other letters describe suffering in the South, abolitionists (12 September 1864) and voting for Lincoln ("we expect to give the Old Rail splitter four years more"), 8 November 1864.
