Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Explains that he has not responded to a recent letter because he was ill. Thanks some friends for medicine they sent. Mentions Paul's hemorrhage. Discusses the status of two reservation churches, neither of which had a minister.

"We have a fearful storm on Sunday, but our services are well attended."
"We have two churches on the reservation but no ministers take charge yet. I would to stay at either these two churches in next Spring, but Mr Cook can do not much here, because he is not able to speak Dakota. These two church are one at White Swan's camp 17 miles above; one at Mad Bull's, 15 miles below, just opposite the Ponca Agency, where the Mr Dorsey & his mother were working."
