Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Rivington provides a list of books he has sent to Knox to sell. Mentions other books he was printing. Asks for a list of subscribers Knox has procured, possibly for Rivington's New-York Gazetteer or an edition of Cook's Voyage Rivington was printing. Rivington was a bookseller, printer, and journalist who came to America in 1760. He published Rivington's New-York Gazetteer. Signed on docket page by Knox stating, "Recd only a doz of the within/ H Knox."
