Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Receipt to Samuel Wells, and signed by him. Wells certifies receipt of eleven dollars from Samuel Shaw, Henry Knox's aide-de-camp, "for the expence of going to Bethlehem and bring Genl Knox's Baggage to camp and for having a new Tongue made to the Waggon." Verso contains a list of three officers and a table of figures. Created at "Camp at Valley Forge."
