Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Transmits Morris a letter from Samuel Shaw, who served as Knox's aide during the Revolutionary War. Shaw hopes to gain employment from Morris in an unspecified position.

Morris, a Philadelphia merchant and financier, served as Continental Congressman (1775-1778), National Superintendent of Finance (1781-1784), and United States Senator (1789-1795).
