Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the details of New York being chosen as the site for Congress. Mentions the opinions of [James] Madison, [Henry] Lee, and [William] Few. Reports that this decision is still not final, as some states are not yet voting. Discusses military matters, such as financial accounts for recruiting soldiers. Notes that Mr. King arrived in town the previous evening (possibly Rufus King).

[1] The decisions in Congress yesterday were in favor of New York, seven states [struck: stat]] for it Vir N. Hampshire Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, N. York, New Jersey & South Carolina. Mr.Maddison & Colo Harry Lee from Virginia in favor & Mr. Few of Georgia - However to day the subject of the whole ordinance being on the [Carpet] Rhode Island either declines voting or is not permitted by the Southern States to vote, so that the final business is still undetermined, and tomorrow may produce another change in the Majority of votes.
