At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Miranda asks Knox to "give Col. W[illiam] S[tephens] Smith a copy of that Small Cypher I gave to you at Boston." Smith will then give Knox a letter from Miranda.

Miranda's full name is Francisco Sebastián de Miranda y Rodríguez de Espinosa, but is most commonly known as Francisco de Miranda.
