Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certifies that Major John Burnham has settled his accounts with regards to his pay, subsistence, and monies given to him for recruitment purposes. Declares that Burnham's accounts are now balanced.

Howell was auditor of accounts of the War Department until the adoption of the Federal Constitution, when he was appointed Paymaster General of the Army. He held this office until his death. Howell was also secretary of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati 1791-1793. Paymaster-General John Pierce died in August 1788.
