Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Docketed as "some minutes respecting the terms of the proposed loan to the U.S - for [illegible] the troops to be raised by virtues of the resolve of Congress of the 20th October 1786." The loan is for $500,000. (The troops were being raised to quell Shays's Rebellion.)
