Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Explains duties for General St. Clair under the employ of the United States government concerning conflict with the Indians. States that "[t]he great policy therefore of the general government is to establish a just and liberal peace with all the Indian tribes within the limits and in the vicinity of the [territory ?] of the United States." Describes details of future campaigns and orders. Despite the goal of peace, "[i]t is hardly possible if the Indians continue hostile, that [you] will be suffered quietly to establish a post at the Miami village."
