At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the [Congressional] inquiry into the failure of the expedition under Major General Arthur St. Clair - this was St. Clair's Defeat, also known as the "Columbia Massacre," or the "Battle of the Wabash" in 1791 where the Indians were fighting settlers who they felt were encroaching on their land. [1] The report you made to the House of Representatives on [teus] eighth day of May last having been printed by order of the House and in consequence there of published to the World I conceived it be a duty I owed to myself as well as to [text loss] to address the letter to the house of Representatives on the fourteenth day of [November] last a Copy of which is hereunto annexed N:o [1]...
