Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Former Confederate General John B. Hood writes to Commander of the Military Division of the Gulf, General Philip Sheridan (1865-1867). Requests permission for Colonel Harding to visit Mexico on business. Includes initials after post script that relates: "Sorry I missed you & Kautz" (possibly referring to General Augustine Valentine Kautz).
