Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Johnston, Confederate General commanding Department 2, writes to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Recommends Captain V. Sheliha for an open position in the engineer corps (possibly referring to Prussian engineer Victor Von Scheliha). Docket includes the name of General Felix Kirk Zollicoffer, who had been killed 19 January 1862 at Mill Springs, Kentucky. Docket is dated 8 and 25 January. Two bust engravings of Johnston included as collateral.
