Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writing in German, Blenker gives orders for the care of a Count Ingleheim. On verso there is an autograph note signed in English of medical supplies furnished on board a vessel for Count Ingleheim written by John G. T. Holston. One bust engraving of Blenker included as collateral.

Louis Blenker was a Union Brigadier General of Volunteers, born in Germany.
