Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Special order granting a leave of absence for thirty days to Colonel James D. Fessenden, Aide de Camp. "By command of General Hunter". Also signed by Fessenden. Full length engravign of Halpine included as collateral.

Charles G. Halpine edited numerous newspapers, including the "Citizen," and served as a Union officer and Assistant Adjutant General, later Adjutant General for General Henry Halleck. Born in Ireland.
James D. Fessenden was a Union officer, who organized and commanded the first regiment of colored troops in May, 1862. Reached the rank of Brigadier General of Volunteers.
