At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Recommendation for Captain Price. Says Price "has recently been on a tour of Inspection of the Cavalry of the West and can give you much valuable information concerning that arm." Requests that Kelton place Price on his staff. On War Department, Cavalry Bureau letterhead. One bust engraving of Kautz included as collateral.

Augustus V. Kautz was a Union Brigadier General of Volunteers.
John C. Kelton was a Union Colonel and Assistant Adjutant General.
