At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Authorizes Hamilton to make his Brigade Head Quarters with his Wisconsin regiment. Must have been written during 1861, since this was the only year during which Hamilton would have been in the vicinity of Maryland and under Bank's command during the month of December. Banks resigned from the army in April 1863, and in December 1862 he was serving in the Western theater.
