Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly written in South Carolina. Gist, an acting adjutant and inspector general, states "The 16, Reg't Col Young will be charged with the special [Horton?] Service for the next ten days, they have no arms- I recommend that ... arms be issued to Col Young with ten rounds of ammunition, to be returned, if not used, at the expiration of the special service with which his Reg't is charged."
