Forwarding Lee's orders and stating the importance of defending Richmond. Forwards "instructions from Genl Lee for your guidance they are vague enough." Says focus should be on "guarding the obstructions" moreso than the roads. States "The duty then is plain, it is simply to prevent the Yankees from gaining the 'gate' to Richmond." Hill was located near Richmond at the time as well. Written during the Peninsula Campaign, shortly before the Seven Days.

Henry A. Wise was a Confederate Brigadier General, and had previously been governor of Virginia and Congressman.

The gaurding of the obsructions is the great thing to be done. The watching of the roads can be done by cavalry with small Infantry supports.
I cannot leave here or I would go down & see the wants of the position & try to have them supplied.
