Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Barksdale, a United States Representative from Mississippi, writes to Toucey, Secretary of the Navy. On behalf of his congressional district, nominates James G. Baldwin for the position of midshipman at Annapolis. Includes several dockets, dated 22 August 1860 and 29 September 1860.
