Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written near Corinth. Confederate Major General Cheatham, commander of the 2nd Division, lst Corps, Army of the Mississippi, thanks Keeler for a box of vegetables he sent, delivered by Mr. Moore. Writes "I assure you I relished the dinner you afforded me more than anything I have eaten for a long time- and fear you will spoil my appetite for the usual soldiers fare of meat & bread."
