At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly written in 1861. Written in Columbus (possibly Kentucky). General Stewart asks General Pillow to transmit a letter written to him (Stewart) from the Secretary of War. Discusses details pertaining to his command. Reports that a company led by Captain J. W. Stewart (possibly John W. Stewart) at Island No. 10 has not received pay for several months. Requests that Pillow direct the paymaster to pay J. W. Stewart's troops.

Judah P. Benjamin served as Confederate Secretary of War 17 September 1861- 24 March 1862.
