Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written near Tanners Creek. Colston, Colonel of the 16th Regiment, Virginia Volunteers. Mentions that he previously sent his Quartermaster Lieutenant A. T. Culpeper (possibly Alexander T. Culpepper) to request a grant of muskets from Clark. Remarks that Clark agreed to an exchange of percussion muskets for flint muskets. Requests that Clark order his ordnance officer to transmit the muskets without delay. One bust engraving of an unidentified man included as collateral.
