Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Floyd, a member of the Virginia state legislature, writes to McClelland, United States Secretary of the Interior. Recommends the appointment of General Douglas B. Layne for the post of Marshall of the Western District of Virginia. Writes, "He is at present in the senate of Va & a most efficient member, enjoying the confidence of his party..." One bust engraving of Floyd included as collateral.

Floyd served as Governor of Virginia 1849-1852, and as a general in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War.
