Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Fry, in command of the Augusta District, writes to Lieutenant Colonel J. M. Otey (possibly John M. Otey), Assistant Adjutant General. Has just received a dispatch directing the extension of a courier line from Columbia to Winnsboro, South Carolina. Sends a duplicate of his communication. Reports that the pontoon bridge at Lisbon, Georgia is finished. Docket notes that this letter was received 20 March 1865.
