Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Kemper, General in the Provisional army of Virginia, informs Letcher, Governor of Virginia: "Ambrose P. Hill of this state, late a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and of long experience in the service, is now on his way to Virginia from the West- with the view of tendering his services to the State. I humbly hope that the State will secure the benefit of his valuable services."

Hill served as a General in the Confederate Army.
