Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Also signed by General Fitz John Porter. Requests that the Governor of New York suggest the commission of Lieutenant [Oscar] Von Luttwitz as First Lieutenant, Company C., 1st New York Artillery, commanded by Major [Albert] Arndt. Luttwitz will fill a vacancy formerly occupied by Lieutenant Fred August Schnitzlein, who has been absent on sick leave for more than one month. Notes that Schnitzlein has sent a resignation, and that Luttwitz's appointment "will prevent the discharge or the acceptance of the resignation... " General Porter forwards and recommends Luttwitz's appointment.

Edwin D. Morgan was Governor of New York 1859-1862. Hunt served as colonel on the staff of General George Brinton McClellan during the Peninsula Campaign. As colonel, Hunt organized and trained the artillery reserve of the Army of the Potomac.
