General McDowell, commanding Division of the Potomac, writes to Cameron, Secretary of War. Recommends Captain James A. Hardie, 5th Artillery, for appointment as assistant inspector general. Writes "He is, beyond question, one of the most competent persons for the place in the Army and in every way worthy of it. He has no equal in many qualifications which he possesses for a staff officer."
James Allen Hardie served at various military posts during the Civil War, obtaining appointment as Brigadier General of Volunteers November 1862, and as Brigadier General by brevet 3 March 1865 and Major General by brevet 13 March 1865.
