Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Lyon writes to Bayles, commander of a Marine Hospital (possibly the St. Louis Marine Hospital), requesting that he transfer Privates Cross and Stevens of Co. A Rifle Battalion to Co. F 1st Regt. Comes with an autograph endorsement signed by Frank P. Blair, colonel, 1st Missouri Regiment, giving his approval. Written from the St. Louis arsenal.

Blair was appointed Brigadier General in August 1862.
