Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Depicts officers of the ship Kearsarge, first launched 11 September 1861 by the Portsmouth Navy Yard. Apparently reprinted by Howard in 1906. Depicts Civil War-era officers. Accompanied by three lists citing the names of officers depicted in the photograph. Notes that at the time this photo was originally taken, John Winslow was Captain of the Kearsarge.
