Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cullum, Lieutenant Colonel and Aide-de-Camp to General Winfield Scott, writes "General Scott directs me to return his thanks for the valuable compilation of 'Naval Terms' presented to him by you."

Cullum was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers in November 1861, and Brigadier and Major General, United States Army, March 1865.
