Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Hamilton that General William S. Rosecrans is in Rienzi, and had hoped to see Hamilton at Jacinto, Mississippi earlier that day, but had urgent business which detained him. Writes, "He is very anxious to see you & requests you to come over At once if possible..."
If indeed written in 1862, possibly written to Charles Smith Hamilton or Schuyler Hamilton.

Charles Smith Hamilton served at Iuka (19 September 1862) in command of a division of Rosecrans' army; Schuyler Hamilton commanded the left wing of the Army of Mississippi in 1862, while Rosecrans commanded the right wing.
