Clem, Lieutenant of the 24th Infantry, writes to General Wood and other members of an executive committee organizing a reunion in Dayton, Ohio. Regretfully declines an invitation to attend a reunion 20 and 21 November, 1872. Writes, "I would rather miss any other reunion than the one at Dayton, as I have some very pleasant recollections of the place, besides the natural love for my native "Buckeye State."

Clem was ten years old when he informally joined the 22nd Michigan Regiment as a drummer boy. He remained in the military throughout his life, achieving the appointment of 2nd Lieutenant in December 1871 (from a personal appeal to Ulysses S. Grant), and becoming colonel and assistant quartermaster general in 1903. Clem retired from the army as a major general in 1916.
