Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lane writes, "I respectfully withdraw my recommendation of Mr. Muller for a Pursership in the Navy, and ask the appointment of Mr. Lewis D. Watkins as a personal favor for which I would be extremely grateful."

Lane served as a Congressional Delegate from Oregon 1851-1858 and a Senator 1859-1860. Buchanan was United States President 1857-1861.
