At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Memminger, Secretary of the Confederate Treasury, responds to two previous letters from B. D. Boyd, president of the bank of Newberry, South Carolina. Seeks to clarify Boyd's request for a loan of fifteen million dollars. Inquires whether the loan should be granted in bonds or stock, and if he can draw on Boyd for the money. Docketed in pencil, possibly at a later date.
