Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

GRIFFIN, Cyrus, (1748-1810), Delegate from Virginia; sent to England to be educated; studied law at the University of Edinburgh and at the Temple in London; returned to Virginia; member of the State house of delegates in 1777, 1778, 1786, and 1787; Member of the Continental Congress 1778-1780, 1787-1788, and served as its president in 1788; president of the supreme court of admiralty; commissioner to the Creek Nation in 1789; judge of the United States District Court of Virginia from December 1789.
