Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Indicates that he is planning "an Expedition to determine the northern terminus of Greenland." Reports to Buel, the assistant editor of Century Magazine, that he has been advised to seek an outlet for publishing articles related to the expedition, but had not yet made specific plans.

Biography: Rober E. Peary was a naval officer, who after two decades of exploring arctic regions, reached the North Pole on 6 April 1909.
