Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs President Lincoln that: "I have just mailed to you a copy of this morning's Columbus Journal containing my denial of a reported conversation between us in relation to the Secy of War & Genl. Halleck, which I will be glad to have you see."

William Dennison served as the Governor of Ohio until January 1862, and later served as Postmaster General in President Lincoln's cabinet.
