Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cleaveland signs as Lieutenant Colonel commanding the 21st militia.

Cleaveland was appointed Brigadier General of Connecticut militia in 1796. Also in 1796, the Connecticut land company appointed Cleaveland as a superintendent surveyor of the company's territory in northeastern Ohio. Cleveland, Ohio is named after Moses.
