Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Documents the receipt from Major General Henry Dearborn of $10,000 for the defense of the Niagara frontier. Lewis was a former governor of New York who served as the quartermaster general of the United States army and also as a major general on the Niagara frontier during the War of 1812.
