Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written on board the U.S. Frigate Constellation near New Castle, Delaware. Murray requests a deposit of approximately $154,000 to be used for military supplies.

Murray served as a naval officer during the American Revolution and commanded a squadron in the Tripolitan war. The U.S.S. Murray (DD-97) and (DD-576) were named in his honor. Willing held various posts in Pennsylvania before the Revolutionary War, served on the Continental Congress 1775-1776, and was later the first president of the Bank of the United States.
