Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hoar, a United States Representative from Massachusetts, discusses a political election with an unknown recipient. States "I do not know the votes in my district ... My opponent's name is George F. Verry. I do not think that anybody knows his politics."

Hoar served as a United States Representative 1869-1876 and Senator 1877-1904. Verry, Mayor of Worcester, Massachusetts in 1872, was an unsuccessful candidate for Congress in 1872 and 1876.
