Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Copy of a letter written by Ingalls, Brigadier General and Chief Quartermaster of the Armies operating against Richmond, to Major General Meigs, U.S. Army Quartermaster General, to add to his annual report a commendation for the Medical Department and hospital system under Dr. Thomas A. McParlin. The copy appears to have been prepared for McParlin. On Office of Chief Quartermaster stationery.
